Irish Rail rejects claims over freight closure

Irish Rail has rejected claims that the closure of its container freight business will lead to further congestion on the roads.

A company spokesman said it would stop taking unit load containers from Friday because this sector had accounted for just 10% of its freight business, but 70% of its losses.

The Irish Exporters Association claimed this would result in more 40ft lorries on the roads each year and worsen congestion in the freight business.

But an Irish Rail spokesman said it would mean up to 40 more lorries a day, which he described as a 'drop in the ocean' when compared to the 10,000 lorries entering Dublin Port every day
